||Malaysia : Government open to the idea of having more groups operating airports
||Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar said, the government has welcomed the idea of having more groups operating airports and funding airport expansion projects.
He said, Putrajaya recognises, local airports are bound to undergo expansions in the long run. However, that airlines may not be allowed to double as airport operators.
He said while addressing a press conference, "I believe the policy is not to allow an airline to operate the terminals. But generally we recognise that KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) needs expansion, but exactly how the expansion is going to be done has not been determined yet.
Kamarudin said, "There are also a few other airports in the country that are in the process of expansion. We are basically open to proposals as to how our future terminals are to be paid for and operated.
At present, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd operates all but one of the country's 40 airports. The Senai International Airport in Johor Bahru is operated by a unit of MMC Corp Bhd.
